Gerry and Jim will bring you music, songs and stories from The Land of Legends. Both are steeped in the oral culture of Ireland’s smallest county.
Gerry O’Connor comes from Dundalk, Co. Louth and was taught by his mother, Rose who was a descendant of three generations of fiddle players. With a focus on his local music of Oriel, he is known world-wide as a soloist and as a founder band member of Lá Lugh, Skylark and Oirialla. He has recorded 14 albums with his first solo album Journeyman hailed as a landmark album of Irish fiddle music, and has performed with all of the leading performers of the Irish music world including members of the Chieftains, Boys of the Lough, Planxty, De Dannan and Bothy Band. Gerry has published a book of Cathal McConnell's songs and is launching a tunebook this week featuring dance music of Oriel recorded at the turn of the 20th century. Gerry is also highly regarded as a violin-maker, music teacher and music producer.
Jim McArdle was born in Drogheda and received his musical education in Carberry’s Pub on the North Strand. He has extensively collected Traditional Music and songs in the Mid Louth area from the Hill of Rath to Ardpatrick, near Tallanstown (where Cromwell lost his nose). His main sources of inspiration have been the concertina playing and singing of the late Mary Ann Carolan (Usher) from the Hill of Rath and Tenure, and the late great fiddler Tommy McArdle from Tallanstown. He has several albums of traditional music and song, including a 3-CD compilation of historic recordings of the Usher family from Tenure. Jim is also a member of the Drogheda-based Old-Timey group, The Watery Hill Boys.
Set in the picturesque surroundings of The Glyde Inn, Annagassan, this evening pairs extraordinary music with an exquisite 4-course meal, showcasing the best of Irish hospitality.
